These crossings are essential for the safety of schoolchildren and families accessing local primary schools. Despite the Local Authority's assertion that there are currently no recorded casualties at these junctions, this does not justify inaction. Waiting for a tragic incident to occur before implementing safety measures is both irresponsible and negligent.
Research indicates that the installation of pedestrian crossings
can significantly reduce accidents. For instance, a study analyzing
pedestrian behavior at unsignalised crossings found that
appropriate infrastructure improvements can enhance safety.

The acute angle of Ackmar Road severely restricts visibility for both pedestrians and motorists, a hazard exacerbated by the outdoor patio of the White Horse Pub, which regularly obstructs sight lines and attracts large crowds.
Currently, the only protected pedestrian crossing to Parsons Green is at the Kings Road end, leaving the northern approach dangerously unprotected. The opening of Jesse’s House on Heathman’s Road has further increased foot traffic, compounding the risk.
The Local Authority has a legal and moral obligation to ensure safe pedestrian access. Failure to act puts children and other vulnerable road users at continued and unnecessary risk. We demand the immediate installation of these crossings to prevent avoidable accidents and protect public safety.
