Address increase in vehicle theft and break-ins on our streets

We the undersigned petition the council to consider implementing the following measures to address the increase in brazen vehicular theft and break-ins on our streets: 1.Increased police presence and monitoring 2. A dedicated police task force to address this growing issue 3. Install CCTV surveillance cameras at key entry/exit points 4. Improve street lighting to deter criminals and make residents feel safe

In the month of December alone, the adjacent wards of Fulham Town, Palace and Hurlingham and Parsons Green reported a collective 33 vehicle related crimes in a single month. That is unacceptable.

We the undersigned are writing to express our deep concern regarding the recent increase in vehicle theft and break-ins targeting the Parsons Green vicinity. Over the last week we have had two brazen attempts two steal vehicles on Linver Road alone, and this distressing trend is creating an environment of fear and insecurity amongst residents. The rise in break-ins has led to substantial damage, loss of property, increased insurance costs and left residents feeling unsafe in the area.

Police seem unable or unwilling to help. I urge the council to take action. Where are our taxes going if basic safety needs aren't being met at our own doorsteps.

Council response

Dear Abbas Ali,

Thank you for your petition received on 25 March 2025. The petition is now closed with 29 responses. Your petition requested the following:

1. Increased police presence and monitoring
2. A dedicated police task force to address this growing issue
3. Install CCTV surveillance cameras at key entry/exit points
4. Improve street lighting to deter criminals and make residents feel safe

My name is Sina Moini, I am the Community Safety Manager at Hammersmith & Fulham Council, and I have carried out a full review of the concerns raised in your petition working with Police and Council colleagues. We understand the strength of feeling behind these concerns and hope the following provides some reassurance and clarity.

1. Increased police presence and monitoring

We have liaised with your local Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT) to ensure they are aware of the concerns raised. The police have agreed to conduct additional patrols in the area, both on foot and in vehicles, where resources allow, to provide a more visible presence and reassurance to residents.

By working in partnership with the police, over the last 18 months we have succeeded in reducing motor vehicle offences in the borough. We are sorry learn that your experience does not reflect this, however we are committed to working with the police to address local concerns, such as those you have raised, until they are addressed.

To secure additional police focus on these crimes, alongside ensuring that the true volume of incidents are known, we strongly encourage all residents to report every incident to the police. Criminal activity is a policing matter, and the police are the appropriate service to respond to and investigate such offences. The council will continue to support the police with any resources or measures they identify as recommended actions to undertake.

• For emergencies or crimes in progress, call 999
• For non-emergencies, call 101 or report online at Report a crime | Metropolitan Police
• For crime prevention advice or to speak with your local Safer Neighbourhood Team, you can stay engaged with Met Engage at Home Page - Met Engage

When you report a crime, you will receive a reference number which can then be used to track your case and its investigation through to conclusion.

Alternatively, a crime, or intelligence, can be reported anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or by visiting their website at http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/. Crimestoppers should not be used to report a crime that is live however as this is not an emergency reporting route.

2. A dedicated police task force

We recognise the distress felt by residents when crime affect their sense of safety. While the deployment of specialist police units is an operational matter for the Metropolitan Police, they have advised that additional patrols will be carried out in the area and they will continue to liaise with us to monitor the situation. We do maintain a regular dialogue with senior officers to ensure community concerns are heard and considered.

We continue to advocate for appropriate police resources in areas of concern and encourage residents to report all incidents to help inform police strategy and resource allocation.

As a Council we recognise police resources are low which is why we invest £4.5m a year in the largest Law Enforcement Team (LET) in the country. The LET helps to tackle anti-social behaviour and illegal activities such as fly tipping, allowing the police's limited resources to focus on issues such as vehicle theft.

3. CCTV surveillance at key entry/exit points

The council’s CCTV network is one of the most advanced in the country, with the most cameras per head of population in the UK, with over 2,000 cameras monitored 24/7. The locations for camera installation are based on a combination of crime data, police intelligence, and wider evidence gathering to inform expansion of the network.

We will assess your area using these factors when considering the next priority areas for camera installation, as part of our wider crime reduction and prevention plans.

4. Improved street lighting

The levels of street lighting across the borough are to a very high standard following an upgrade to LED light units two years ago. The Street Lighting Team will, however, be reassessing your area to ensure lighting levels meet required standards and there are no dark areas on the public highway. If any deficiencies are identified action will be taken to bring lighting up to the required standard.

If residents are aware of specific faults, such as broken or flickering lights, these should be reported directly via the Council’s “Report It” page at Report it | London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (lbhf.gov.uk)

Conclusion

Thank you again for raising these important concerns. We understand how unsettling these issues can be and are committed to working with residents and partners to ensure our borough remains a safe and welcoming place for all.
