We the undersigned petition the council to supervise the implementation of robust citizenship education in community youth clubs. Especially as schools and colleges are closing and people find themselves more isolated from one another, the council should be expanding and highlighting its offering to inform citizens about how they can be involved in the democratic process. This could involve supplementing the youth club activities on offer, including sports, music and dance, with open and discursive citizenship education training. The council could collaborate with the Association for Citizenship Training (ACT) to achieve this.
The local council provides a key link between individual
constituents and large-scale change. However the relationship
between individuals and their local council is often
under-discussed, and therefore under-valued. The local council
should use its unique position to supervise the implementation of
broad and open citizenship training so that individuals have the
information and the tools they need to participate in the
democratic process and to move through life with awareness and
understanding of society's systems.
