Dear Ms Cannarsa,
Thank you for raising the petition to install motorcycle bays in Addison Ward.
The petition closed on January 31st, 2019 with a total of 7 responses received from 4 different roads in Addison Ward.
Unfortunately, the low response rate does not demonstrate a sufficient demand for dedicated motorcycle parking bays in Addison Ward to justify the conversion of existing shared-use parking bays to dedicated motorcycle-only parking. Parking stress in Addison Ward is already extremely high and installing dedicated motorcycle bays will only exacerbate the difficulties residents experience when trying to find a parking space in this area.
Additionally, the geographic spread of the responses means it will not be feasible to find a suitable and convenient site that would accommodate all the respondents’ needs.
The council need to be mindful that even if a motorcycle-only bay was to be installed in the vicinity of these roads, as motorcycles can park anywhere for free, many motorcycle owners would rather park outside their home, than walk to and from a dedicated motorcycle bay. Furthermore, If dedicated bays are not well-used, residents will urge us to convert them back to much needed car parking bays resulting in the costly expense of installing then removing the facility.
To clarify the councils policy, motorcycle only bays will only
be installed where,
1. The location has a permanently high demand for kerb-side motorcycle parking throughout controlled parking zone hours.
2. The installation of a motorcycle-only bay would unquestionably result in increased parking efficiency for all road users during controlled parking hours
3. The proposed motorcycle-only parking bay would not obstruct the highway.
I hope that this response is helpful, and you can appreciate our
position for not proceeding with this request on this
